Getting to Martha’s Vineyard
Since Martha’s Vineyard is an Island, you must arrive by boat or plane — there are no bridges!
Ferry travel is by far the most popular and least expensive option. It also offers the most frequent service, both during the off-season and in the high season. While all ferries (including services from New York City, New Bedford, Mass, Hyannis, Mass., and Quonset Point, R.I.) offer passenger service, only the Steamship Authority from Woods Hole, Mass., offers car service (advance reservation required).
Flying into the Island’s only airport (MVY) is also an option. Cape Air serves the Island all year long, with an expanded schedule in the summer; other commercial carriers and private aircraft provide service to and from the mainland during the summer months. Tradewind Aviation provides shuttle service from New York to Martha’s Vineyard between May and November, Thursday through Monday. Aero Charter NE, based in Mansfield, Mass., provides year-round on-demand charter service to and from the Island.
Once you’re here, you can explore the Island’s 100 square miles and six towns by car, bike, our local bus system, tour bus, or taxi. You’ll find these options all close to ferry terminals. For more insider tips before you travel be sure to order the Martha’s Vineyard Island Guide.
